Archiving email using Eudora under OSX
This document explains how to archive email to your local computer using IMAP and Eudora under OS X.
If you already have the staff email server configured as an IMAP account, you can skip to the bottom of the document and just follow the instructions on how to copy email to your computer.

Within Eudora, select "Window » Personalities".
Create a new personality by clicking the icon on the bottom left hand side of the personality window. When prompted, name the personality "Staff IMAP".

In the "Personalities" section, enter your email username and a mail server address of mail.unimelb.edu.au. Don't worry too much about the "Sending Mail" options unless you plan to keep using the account after the archiving process.

Click on "Personality extras" and select the "IMAP" option for "Mail Protocol" and then download "Full message with attachments" and "Always" remove deleted messages. To make sure deleted messages aren't stored on the server, deselect "Use a trash mailbox on the IMAP server"
Click "OK" to finish configuring the personality.

Now click the "Check Mail" icon on the toolbar and enter your password.
You may be prompted with a dialog box about junk mail boxes - select "OK"
Eudora will then check the mail for your new personality. Instead of downloading the messages to your local computer, IMAP allows you to view all your messages that are still on the server.

In the personalities drawer, expand the "Eudora folder" and "Staff IMAP" folder by clicking on the arrows news to the names.

Select the "Eudora folder" and create a new local mailbox to store your archived mail by clicking on the button on the bottom left hand side. Name this mailbox "Archive".
Double-click the "Staff IMAP" » "Inbox" to move to your email inbox. You can now select the messages you would like to archive and drag-and-drop them in to your "Archive" mailbox. Repeat this step for any other folders you have created on the email server.
The messages you have moved are now stored on local computer and will not affect your disk space usage.
