Archiving email using Eudora under Windows

This document explains how to archive email to your local computer using IMAP and Eudora under Windows.

If you already have the staff email server configured as an IMAP account, you can skip to the bottom of the document and just follow the instructions on how to copy email to your computer.

Within Eudora, select "Tools" » "Personalities".

Right-click within the personality windows and create a new personality with a name of "Staff IMAP".

Select "Skip directly to advanced account setup".

Enter a "Personality Name" of "Staff IMAP", your "Real Name", "Email Address", "User Name" and an "SMTP Server" of "smtp.unimelb.edu.au".

Click on the "Incoming Mail" tab and enter "mail.unimelb.edu.au" for the "Server" address and select "IMAP" for "Configuration". Under "For new mail, download" select "Full message except attachments over 0k", and "When I delete a message", "Move it to Trash".

To make sure that your username and password aren't sent over the network in clear text, you should select "Cram-MD5" for the "Authentication style".

Click OK and Eudora will contact the server and download your mailbox folders.

Create a local mail folder for your archive by clicking on "mail", right-clicking and selecting "New", and naming the folder "Archive".

Double-click on the Staff IMAP Inbox to display all messages in the mailbox.

Select the messages you would like to copy to your local computer and drag-and-drop them in to the "Archive" folder you just created. Repeat this step for any other folders containing email you would like to archive.

The messages you have moved are now stored on local computer and will not affect your disk space usage.
