Staff Email Frequently Asked Questions

What settings should I use to access the staff email server?

My email client is set to use mail.staff.unimelb.edu.au to receive mail. Do I need to change this address?

mail.staff.unimelb.edu.au will continue to point to the correct host but it is strongly recommended that you update the address to prevent any potential problems in the future. New clients should be configured to use mail.unimelb.edu.au.

If your email client is configured to use an encrypted connection via SSL you may receive a certificate warning message if you are using an address other than mail.unimelb.edu.au.

What is the maximum size of a message that I can send?

10MB including attachments.

What is my quota for the email server?

Staff mail quotas are at least 100MB, but the actual size will be occasionally increased as storage capacity advances allow. The quota includes your Spam and Trash folders. You can check your quota via the webmail system or with some email clients.

Are my Spam and Trash mailboxes automatically emptied?

Yes, messages in "Trash", "Spam" or mailboxes starting with "Junk" will automatically be deleted after seven days.

Does the email server support secure connections?

Yes, APOP and CRAM-MD5 for username and password encryption, and POP3 and IMAP over SSL.

Can I use Pine to read my mail?

Yes, you will need to have a user account on Ariel or access to a local computer running Pine. More information and a sample .pinerc file are available here.
