Student Email Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat settings should I use to access the student email server?
Does the email server require secure connections?Yes, secure connections to the mail server are now required. You can use APOP and CRAM-MD5 for username and password encryption and POP3 and IMAP via SSL. How do I configure my email client for secure connections?Eudora 6.1 and below:From the tool bar select Tools, Options, Checking Mail and from the drop-down menu under "Secure sockets when receiving", select "Never" Outlook:From the tool bar select Tools, Email accounts, View or Change existing email accounts. Select your University account, then Change, More Settings, Advanced tab, and tick the option for Incoming server "This server requires an SSL-secured connection". Outlook Express:From the tool bar select Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Advanced tab and tick the option for Incoming server "This server requires an SSL-secured connection". Thunderbird:From the tool bar select Tools, Account settings, Server Settings and tick SSL under Security Settings. My email client is set to use home.student.unimelb.edu.au to receive mail. Do I need to change this address?home.student.unimelb.edu.au will continue to point to the correct host but it is strongly recommended that you update the address to prevent any potential problems in the future. New clients should be configured to use mail.student.unimelb.edu.au. If your email client is configured to use an encrypted connection via SSL you may receive a certificate warning message if you are using an address other than mail.student.unimelb.edu.au. What is the maximum size of a message that I can send?10MB including attachments. What is my quota for the email server?Email quotas are 40MB for all students. The quota includes your Spam and Trash folders. You can check your quota via the webmail system or with some email clients. Are my Spam and Trash mailboxes automatically emptied?Yes, messages in "Trash", "Spam" or mailboxes starting with "Junk" will automatically be deleted after seven days. Can I use Pine to read my mail?Login access to read mail via PINE is no longer supported on the student email service. You can still use PINE to read your email if you have access to run PINE elsewhere by configuring it to connect to the student email via IMAP. |
