IPReg - Frequently Asked Questions
Why do changes made in IPReg take so long to appear in DNS?
Every 30 mins IPReg exports its data to the University's authoritative DNS servers ns1.unimelb.edu.au and ns2.unimelb.edu.au. However due to the nature of the DNS protocol, changes will take some time to propagate throughout the internet. The exact amount of time taken for changes to propagate is dependant on the time to live (TTL) value for the zone in question but typically can be as long as 6 hours for university zones.
For queries originating within the University network the TTL is hardwired to 15 minutes. This means that the maximum time for a change to appear on campus is 45 minutes.
