The University of Melbourne Active Directory

Overview

Information Services(IS) provides Micrsoft® Active Directory® Service to departments,faculties and affiliates in order to provide the University community with maximum flexibility and control over their own local infrastructures (eg: Windows Servers/Clients, Apple MACs, SAMBA) while leveraging of the core authentication of the Active Directory(Kerbros) and central account management service.

Information about the University's Active Directory® (AD) presented on Identity and Access (IA) website is about the current AD environment that used to be supported by the old LAN Server Group, with some information that reflects recent changes in the Active Directory service. IA is currently reviewing the Active Directory Service, and will communicate these changes and information on this website.

Background

The Active Directory at the university was established in 2001 as a result of the Windows 2000 Working Group recommendations in February 2000. Since the its implementation, Active Directory had been maintained by the LAN Server Group. Recent re-structures (2005) within Information Services (IS), has seen the LAN Server Group absorbed into Systems Infrastructure(SI) of IS and the reasonability of Active Directory Service assigned to Identity & Access (IA) of IS.

Purpose

The purpose of this site is to:

  • Provide necessary information about the Active Directory to:
    • Local technical support staff
    • End users, and
    • Orgainsational Units of the University.

The result of this wesbite will be for:

  • Local technical support obtain necessary support information
  • Organisational Units can utilise the service, and
  • End users are able to obtain support information.
