Web Proxies

Information Services operates several proxy services:

  • Central proxy servers
  • Student proxy servers
  • Inbound proxy servers

The primary purpose of the central proxy servers is to save the university and its departments unnecessary expenditure on internet traffic for commonly accessed sites.

The proxy farm was set up in the mid 1990's in response to the perceived large growth (and projected growth) in the usage of the web and has continued to save the university considerable expenditure since that time.

The main proxy servers are available to all parts of the university, departments who use this service only pay for web content that was not already in the cache.

The student proxy servers provide authenticated quota-restricted web access to the university student population, access to the internet through the student proxies is funded centrally by the university.

The inbound proxy service provides a way for members of the university to gain access to WWW information published on the web but restricted to university network access only. By authenticating to the inbound proxy members of the university (staff and students) are able to view this restricted content from anywhere in the world.
