IT SECURITY BULLETIN - DECEMBER 2005

1. IT SECURITY DURING THE HOLIDAYS
------------------------------------
Shutting down your computer when you are away is good
for the environment and also enhances the security of
your computer.

Remember to maintain physical security. Lock your
office if possible. Also, keep portable computing
equipment and media in locked and secure storage.

IT Security Services wishes everyone a Merry Christmas
and safe holidays.

3. INFORMATION SECURITY AWARENESS WEEK
----------------------------------------
The first Information Security Awareness Week in the
University is organised for the week beginning 06 Feb 2006.
Look out for more publicity on this event.

5. AusCERT-CAUDIT: Windows Intrusion Prevention Workshop
----------------------------------------------------------
This two day (24-25 Jan 06) workshop will cover technical
aspects of protection strategies for Windows environments.
The course will identify common attack types used to
penetrate Windows servers and workstations, common
misconfigurations and architectural issues associated with
maintaining Windows Server 2003 systems and Windows XP clients.

6. SOPHOS ANNUAL SECURITY REPORT

"New threats increase by 48% in 2005 as cybercriminals turn to targeted attacks"

Sophos released its annual security report on 06 Dec 2005, naming Zafi-D as the year's worst malware.

7. CYBER-CRIME YIELDS MORE CASH THAN DRUGS
--------------------------------------------
Proceeds from cyber-crime outpaced proceeds from sale of
illegal drugs in 2004, and the gap is predicted to widen.
