1. DEPARTMENT/FACULTY FIREWALL
---------------------------------------------
The IT Users Committee has asked for a group to study and
make recommendations of firewalls to be deployed for
departmental networks.

Staff interested participating in implementing a firewall
for the department or faculty network are invited to register
with the undersigned before Tuesday 02 Dec 2003.

This group will be formed with the following objectives:
a. Compile features and functions required
b. Study solutions available in the industry
c. Submit findings and recommendations to ITUC

Involvement in this group is expected to be for a period
of 3 months commencing December 2003.

2. REVAMPED IT SECURITY WEBSITE
---------------------------------------------
The University's IT Security website has been revamped. It has been
re-organised for easier navigation and access to information. Users
are encouraged to visit the website for information and to report
IT Security incidents. Feedback via email to the undersigned is welcomed.

3. MICROSOFT MONTHLY ADVISORIES
-----------------------------------------------
Microsoft has announced that it will publish advisories and security
bulletins once a month. Usually on the second Tuesday of every month,
local US time. One advantage of such an arrangement would be the
ability to schedule routine maintenance work for Microsoft computers.

4. SECURECON04
----------------------
SecureCon04 will be held on Thu 12 Feb 2004 and Fri 13 Feb 2004.
Presentations, workshops and seminars on various aspects of IT Security
are organised. More information on this event will be available at the
SecureCon04 website next week: http://securecon.unimelb.edu.au/
