The Computer Visualization Facility (CVF) was launched in August 2001 as an initiative of IT Research Computing Services (formerly Advanced Research Computing). Providing an additional resource to researchers to allow visualizing vast datasets and communicating complex concepts, the facility also provided a valuable resource to the wider University community as well. Users range from performance artists and animators through to language development specialists and trauma psychologists. As part of IT Research Computing Services, the resources are provided free of charge to University staff and postgraduate students. Under certain circumstances undergraduates and external parties may also be able to use the CVF. Opening hours are 8:45am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, though additional access can be arranged on application. Some facilities such as the renderfarm may be operated externally and used out of hours.
- Hardware
The CVF includes two high-end Windows PCs with powerful graphics cards and multiple large screen displays. A Quad G5 Macintosh with a 21" monitor provides an excellent resource for those who prefer to the Mac platform. We also have a VisionStation for immersive visualization, a 61" plasma screen and a stereo projection facility for passive stereo 3D. For the more demanding CGI render jobs, we provide a small dedicated renderfarm and also have the ability to expand this resource if required.
