Information Services Learning & teaching support for staff

Slide projection strategy for the period 2008-2009

Learning Space Support (LSS), within the Information Services Division, is responsible for supporting slide projectors across shared learning spaces on Parkville Campus.

LSS will continue to support those academics who are reliant upon slide projection technology for their teaching programs, within the parameters of available resources, known data about utilisation patterns, and industry advice regarding availability of spare parts.

  1. LSS will progressively re-distribute the available fleet of slide projectors to ensure that the best possible high-spec slide projectors are deployed and supported within appropriate shared learning spaces in those learning precincts where demand is greatest (Architecture, Arts, Bio-Medical/Life Sciences).
  2. LSS will manage a carefully staged withdrawal of obsolete Elmo slide projectors (maintenance is problematic as critical spare parts are no longer available).
  3. LSS will maintain a consolidated fleet of Kodak Ektapro slide projectors (and some "hot spares") to the highest possible standard (subject to spare parts and globes remaining readily available for this model).
  4. LSS will assist academics with digitisation of 35mm slides, where copyright permits (a fee for service may apply in some instances).

Implications

LSS will support slide projection technology, to an acceptable level, within the parameters of known maintenance constraints, across 34 spaces:

LSS will manage the permanent withdrawal of slide projectors from 31 spaces where demand is non-existent (or projection is not optimal), according to the following plan:

  1. Nov 2007: 221 Bouverie St-Theatres 1 & 2; 234 Queensberry St-Public Policy Theatre; 200 Berkeley St-Physiotherapy Theatre; Old Arts-235; Old Arts-239 [completed to schedule].
  2. Dec 2007: Chemistry-Cuming, Masson and Senior theatres; Engineering-C1, C2, E1, E2 theatres; Old Engineering-G30; Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering-Theatre; Babel-305 [Chisholm Theatrette]; Economics & Commerce-115 [Prest Theatrette] [completed to schedule].
  3. June 2008: Richard Berry-JH Michell and Russell Love theatres; Arts Centre-Harold White Theatre; Veterinary Science-214 [theatrette] & VRI theatre; Microbiology-Thomas Cherry Theatrette [decommissioning across these spaces was re-comunicated to the University community during early June 2008, carefully reviewed with the Timetable Office, and is proceeding to plan].
  4. Nov 2008: Doug McDonell and Redmond Barry buildings, subject to advice from academics allocated teaching spaces in these buildings for the 2009 academic year, and final consultation with the Timetable Office during the preparation of the 2009 timetable [consultation with the Timetable Office commenced 27 June 2008 and is proceeding to plan].

Consultation period: 25 September to 19 October 2007

Strategy release date: 26 October 2007
